RE: Converting a regular to an "offroad"

I converted our PUP for off pavement/boondocking use. The suspension changes consist of "flipping" the axle and adding 15" tires, new springs and shocks. The other major changes were a large battery bank, solar panels and battery monitoring electronics.

RE: Mileage for 2500HD 6.0 Gas

I get about 17 mpg empty and around 10 or 11 towing the PUP or hauling the TC. The mileages are mostly highway with a little in town mixed in. The 6 speed trany helps a lot.

RE: Mpg chevy silverado 2500hd CC 4x4 W/Lance 820

I just completed a 5000 mile trip that went through just about every type of terrain you can get. I averaged about 11 mpg over the whole trip. The best I got was just over 12 and the worst was about 8.5.

RE: Lightweight stripped-down "weekender" camper

Sorry, I haven't had time to get any pics of the new TC taken and posted. I've been working on it pretty much full time trying to get it functional for our upcoming trip.
Yes, a stud finder works fine. The camper came with upper cabinets. I just had to build the counter top and lower cabinets.

RE: Lightweight stripped-down "weekender" camper

I have a Six-Pac U850 that I'm in the process of fixing up. I had them install grey and fresh water tanks as well as a cassette toilet and propane tank. I have added cabinets with a sink and stove as well as a water heater and outside shower.
I went the custom route because I have rather special uses in mind for the camper. If it wasn't for the special needs I'd probably have been better off getting one of their higher end models. So far everything is working out really well and I'm taking it on a cross country trip soon so we'll see how well it actually works.

RE: Has anyone ever....

I had the dealer move the axle under the springs before I picked it up. I then added larger tires, shocks and slightly higher rated double eye leaf springs. It made a huge difference.

RE: Where will your first trip be???

Our first trip with the new TC will be a two week trip from central California to central Illinois and back. We'll be taking the scenic route including the Grand Canyon and a good part of southern Utah. We plan on avoiding the interstates and sticking to the roads less traveled.:)

RE: Who has a Lifeline Battery??

I've got one. It's a GPL-8DL and it's a monster. I can't tell you anything about longevity because I haven't been camping with it yet. I got it for its capacity and the fact that it doesn't need maintenance and it has minimal out-gassing.

RE: What have you done to lighten your TC?

All I've done is add weight to the TC. It only weighed about 1440 lbs from the factory and I figure I've added about 150 to 200 lbs so far.:)

RE: ON STAR antenna conflict with Camper

The only use I would have for OnStar is for emergency communications. Lag time for satellite communications is not an issue in an emergency. However, being able to get help when you break down or have an accident when you're deep in the back country is. No cell phone, however powerful, is of any use if you can't get a signal.
My new truck came with OnStar but I let the subscription lapse because I didn't use it. Not even once.

RE: ON STAR antenna conflict with Camper

Direct from the Onstar site:
All OnStar-equipped vehicles have one of three types of equipment, based on wireless network technologies:
Analog-Only:
OnStar-equipped vehicles with analog-only equipment were designed to operate only on the analog wireless network and cannot be upgraded to operate on the digital network. Vehicles with this equipment will no longer be able to receive OnStar services beginning January 1, 2008. At that time, service will be available only through dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment. Analog-only vehicles cannot be upgraded to digital equipment.
Analog/Digital-Ready:
OnStar-equipped vehicles with analog/digital-ready equipment operate on the analog wireless network, but can be upgraded to dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment if available for that vehicle. Beginning January 1, 2008, OnStar service will not be available on these vehicles unless the OnStar equipment has been upgraded to dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment.
Dual-Mode (Analog/Digital):
OnStar-equipped vehicles with dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment operate on both the analog and digital wireless networks and will not require an upgrade in connection with the wireless industry's transition to the digital network.
The only use of satellite is for GPS positioning. If they actually connected via satellite it might be worth paying for. Until they do I'll stick to my cell phone.

RE: GM 900 series TC fit

I just purchased a Six-Pac camper and the factory notched out the rear corners so that the camper would sit on the bed of the truck properly. I only have about 1/2" clearance between the lower portion of the reinforcing ribs and the sides of the camper. Aside from the notched corners it fits fine, tight but fine. I could have avoided the notches if I raised the bottom of the bed using plywood or some of that foam insulation.

OnStar is just a glorified high power cell phone, it doesn't use satelites.

RE: Whose got the toughest pup?

houtsdg,
I don't use any gussets. I don't think they would really be necessary but they couldn't hurt either. As long as your coupler doesn't bind the forces on the camper frame are minimal.
I've dragged the camper down some fairly knarly forest service roads and I haven't seen any frame damage so far. All the cabinets and such are still intact and firmly attached.
I did add some reinforcement to the support straps that hold the water tank up. The weight of 20 gallons of water jumping up and down bent them pretty bad. I just straightened them out and welded on some 1-1/2" angle iron. The only other thing I've had happen was one of the cabinet drawers slid open but that was only because I forgot to latch it.:S
The best thing you can do to maintain the integrity of the trailer is to take your time. Taking the roads too fast will destroy just about any trailer. That unexpected pothole or gully can also do a number on your TV.

TC and tent trailer. We don't actually have the TC yet but we should hopefully be going to pick it up in the next week or so.:B The TC is going to be for traveling/exploring and the PUP for those times we want to stay in one spot for more than a day or two.

You might want to look at a Flip-Pac it falls in between the bed tent and a Four Wheel camper.
